Effects of Hydroponic System and Ionic Concentrations on Growth of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.)

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to determine the effects of hydroponic system and ionic concentrations on the growth responses of hydroponically grown leaf lettuce. Lettuce grown on aeroponic and deep flow system with ionic concentration of quarter, half, standard and doubled nutrient solution recommended by Yamazaki for lettuce. Lettuce seeds(Chungchima lettuce) were sown at carbonized rice hull. Quarter nutrient solution for raising seedlings applied and transplanted. Growth parameters in terms of leaf length, leaf width, number of leaves, leaf area, fresh and dry weight of each organs were investigated. Overall growth parameters were increased over doubled in the aeroponic system than that of the deep flow system except for the ionic concentration of quarter. The differences were greater with the lowering the ionic concentration. Especially, leaf fresh weight increased quadruple in the quarter ionic concentration. The changes of leaf shape were noted that both leaf width and leaf thickness were increased in the aeroponic system than that of the deep flow system.
